Israeli, Palestinian cease-fire extension in question after fresh rocket fire

Israeli military officials said rockets were fired from Gaza shortly before expiration of three-day truce; both sides strike, but five-day truce agreed upon.

TEL AVIV, Israel, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- The state of affairs in Gaza wasn't clear Thursday as the Israel Defense Forces launched rockets shortly after Palestinian officials agreed to a five-day extension of a cease-fire.

A 72-hour truce was set to expire Wednesday as Israeli and Palestinian envoys negotiated a possible end to the fighting.

The negotiations were moderated by officials in Cairo.

Shortly before the truce ended, Israeli military officials said at least eight rockets were fired toward Israel from Gaza.

IDF responded by striking targets in the Gaza Strip Thursday just before Palestinian officials agreed to extending the cease-fire by five days.

An Israeli official said Israel had agreed to the truce prior to the strike on its territory they believe came from Gaza.

It's unclear if the recent rocket fire will prevent the longer cease-fire from taking hold.
