After the quake, electricity and telecommunications were cut in the region, making it difficult for people to reach family, one resident told China's state-run news agency, Xinhua.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 6.2 miles and was situated 7 miles west northwest of Wenping and 454 miles north northwest of Ha Noi, Vietnam.
