Poll: Russians support actions in Ukraine

WASHINGTON, July 31 (UPI) -- Russians support their country's tough position on Ukraine, despite the effects of economic sanctions, a Gallup Poll released Thursday indicates.

The survey, published in Washington, was taken before the latest round of sanctions by the United States and the European Union. It said nearly two-thirds of Russians believe a "very strong position" in relations with Ukraine is required, and 95 percent approve of Crimea's annexation in March.

Previous sanctions did not dampen enthusiasm for Russian President Vladimir Putin's popularity, nor did they affect respondents' views on the economy. More Russians see the country's economy improving than at any time since 2008.

Majorities in all demographic segments -- age, gender and educational level -- back a strong position on Ukraine, with those over 60, who remember Ukraine as a member of the Soviet Union, the most likely to support a strong position, Gallup found.
