NEW YORK, July 22 (UPI) -- Jon Stewart began The Daily Show Monday by illustrating how people can't win when they discuss the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Stewart had barely introduced the segment, "We need to talk about Israel," when he was immediately shouted at over how Israel has the right to defend itself and how he is a "self-hating Jew." After regaining composure, he said the word "Hamas" and was verbally assaulted for not condemning the murder of Palestinian children and was called a "Zionist pig."
The pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian Westerners have become more vocal in their opinions since the conflict between the two escalated. While the U.S. retains its support for Israel, there are growing concerns about the number of civilian deaths in Israel's fight against Hamas.
Secretary of State John Kerry made the media rounds reaffirming the administration's policy when he was caught on a hot mic saying the Israeli assault on Hamas was "a hell of a pinpoint operation."
Both the U.S. and the U.N. have demanded an immediate ceasefire, which Kerry is attempting to broker in Cairo.
