Investigators reach Malaysia Airlines crash site in Ukraine

Access to the area was granted by pro-Russian separatist leaders in the area.

GRABOVO , Ukraine, July 18 (UPI) -- International investigators arrived Friday at the eastern Ukraine site of the crash of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17.

Thirty staff members of the Organization for the Security and Co-operation in Europe reached the site, near the village of Grabovo, after they were allowed safe access to the area by leaders of the separatist movement fighting Ukrainian military troops.

Debris from the crash of the Boeing 777, in which 298 people were killed, covers a wide area in rebel-held territory.

Among the dead was world-renowned AIDS researcher Joep Lange, a Dutch citizen, who was traveling to Melbourne, Australia, with several other prominent researchers to attend a conference on HIV.
