MOSCOW , July 17 (UPI) --
A Malaysia Airlines plane was reported missing in eastern Ukraine Thursday while traveling from Amsterdam, Netherlands, to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The plane is a Boeing 777, the independent Russian news agency Interfax reported, adding 295 people were aboard and that the plane crashed
within 20 miles of Ukraine's border with Russia.
The Interfax report speculated the plane may have been shot down. The area in which the crash allegedly occurred is the site of military conflict between pro-Russian separatists and the Ukrainian military.
Malaysia Airlines confirmed it lost contact with Flight MH17, noting its last known position was over Ukrainian airspace.
