MENDOZA, Argentina, July 17 (UPI) -- Argentines have started a petition to move a depressed polar bear named Arturo from Argentina to Canada in an effort to save his life.
The 29-year-old polar bear has been exhibiting concerning behavior since his longtime companion Pelusa died two years ago. He is now alone in a place where temperatures can reach 95 degrees. He is "zombie-like" and professionals fear it is a sign that he is slowly going insane.
"You can see he is going crazy. He moves the way polar bears do when they are suffering a lot of stress," said Argentine professor Fernanda Arentsen.
Unfortunately, Argentina does not keep the necessary documents for the bear to be transferred to Canada and zookeepers fear the journey will kill the old bear.
As of Thursday afternoon, the petition on Change.org received almost 200,000 signatures. They plan to present the petition to Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner with the hope that she will intervene.
