Massive protests erupt in Kashmir after military crash kills 6

NEW DELHI, July 16 (UPI) -- A deadly crash caused by a speeding Indian Army truck has sparked violent protests in Kashmir.

Both Pakistan and India have laid claim to all of Kashmir although its administration is split between the two countries. The crash took place in the Indian-administered part of Kashmir, where anti-Indian and anti-security forces sentiments are reportedly high.

The accident occurred Wednesday morning when an army vehicle was speeding on the Srinagar-Baramullah highway near the city of Srinagar. As the army vehicle attempted to pass another vehicle, it crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a taxi, killing six people.

A BBC correspondent reported "massive protests" erupted after the accident, with protesters throwing stones at security forces and attempting to set fire to the army vehicle.

An investigation is underway. The Kashmir Dispatch reported the army driver was taken into police custody and arrested.
