BEIJING , July 14 (UPI) -- Rui Chenggang, host of a financial news program on Chinese television, was detained by police in a corruption and bribery investigation.
Rui, 36, was taken from the China Central Television studios in Beijing Friday, immediately prior to the Economic News program he hosts, according to the state-run People's Daily. He is regarded as a prominent journalist and celebrity in China.
His detention by police is part of the Chinese government's sweeping anti-corruption campaign, and comes after officials announced an inquest in June into suspected bribery by his supervisor Guo Zhenxi, CCTV's advertising director and head of its finance channel.
CCTV sources revealed Rui and family members allegedly established a public relations firm to capitalize on his fame, the Shanghai-based media platform The Paper said, adding the firm took payments from interview subjects seeking television appearances and meetings with government officials.
