Somalia fires police and intelligence chiefs following assault on presidential palace

Somalia's police and intelligence chiefs were fired following al-Shabaab's Tuesday attack against the presidential palace.

MOGADISHU, Somalia, July 9 (UPI) -- Following al-Shabaab's assault against the presidential palace on Tuesday, the Somali government fired the chiefs of police and intelligence.

Information Minister Mustafa Dhuhulow said that police chief Abdihakim Saaid and intelligence head Bashir Gobe were removed immediately.

Al-Shabaab detonated a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) outside the gates of the residence on Tuesday but were repelled by African Union and Somali troops.

The president of Somalia was unharmed in the attack.
