6.9 magnitude earthquake rattles Guatemala and Mexico

GUATEMALA CITY, July 7 (UPI) -- A 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Mexico near the border with Guatemala early Monday morning.

Guatemalan authorities reported at least two people died in the earthquake. On the Mexican side of the border, Chiapas state authorities reported a man identified as Jose Molina died when a crumbling wall fell on him.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake's epicenter was one mile north-northeast of Puerto Madero, Mexico and 18 miles from Ciudad Tecun Uman, Guatemala at a depth of 60 kilometers.

The tremor was felt as far away as Mexico City, some 550 miles away, but no damage was reported there. Minor damage was reported in the Mexican border city of Tapachula.

The quake began at 6:23 a.m. local time.
