LONDON , July 3 (UPI) -- Extremist Sunni militants have seized a major Syrian oil field under control of another group of militants, a human rights group reported Thursday.

The Al-Omar oil field in eastern Syria's Deir Ezzor province -- Syria's largest oil field, capable of producing 75,000 barrels of oil per day -- is now in the hands of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, according to the London-based monitoring group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The militants claimed the oil field after the fighters controlling it, the al-Qaida-affiliated al-Nusra Front, withdrew without incident. No shots were fired and no violence was reported, the rights group said.

ISIS is among the groups fighting the Syrian government in its four-year civil war, and has undertaken the capture of territory in Syria and Iraq in recent months, claiming it controls the land from Aleppo, Syria, eastward to Diyala province in eastern Iraq.
