LONDON , June 30 (UPI) -- Entertainer Rolf Harris was convicted on 12 counts of indecent assault Monday in London, stemming from 12 charges dating back to 1968.
The Australian-born Harris, 84, had a long career on British television as singer, sketch artist and star of children's programs after an international hit record in the early 1960s -- the novelty song "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport."
During his six-week trial, Harris was depicted in court by prosecutors as a serial molester of women and underage girls, in Britain and Australia.
"He targeted fans who were mesmerized by his fame and talents. He was a children's entertainer and they were beguiled by his singing and painting. And the penalty of their admiration was to suffer sexual assault," prosecution attorney Sasha Wass told the court, which heard evidence from 10 women who claimed to have been groped or assaulted.
At least seven other women offered testimony but were not part of the case, and a British charity serving sexual abuse victims said it received 13 calls from people who claimed to have been abused by Harris.
Harris will be sentenced Friday, the presiding judge said in rendering the verdict.
