ANGUS, Ontario, June 18 (UPI) -- A tornado and severe thunderstorm in southern Ontario damaged about 100 homes and left 58,000 people without electricity.

The storm late Tuesday afternoon -- a remnant of the weather system that brought tornadoes to Nebraska earlier in the week -- was centered on the suburban Ontario town of Angus, northwest of Toronto. Vehicles were overturned and homes were left without walls.

No life-threatening injuries were reported, the Ontario Provincial Police said. Tornadoes are rare in the area, although a confirmed sighting of a tornado occurred near the airport at Owen Sound, 190 kilometers (118 miles) northwest of Toronto.

At its height, the storm caused power outages to 46,000 people, the utility company Hydro One reported, and Toronto Hydro, which supplies electricity to the city of Toronto, said 12,000 of its customers were without power. According to Hydro One spokeswoman Marylena Stey:

"We're seeing that a lot of limbs on trees have fallen, bringing power lines on the road, poles have been snapped. In a lot of cases, the areas aren't safe yet for our crews to access, so we are waiting for roads to be cleaned up and reopened so we can get in and restore power."

She added all Hydro One customers should see their electricity restored by late Wednesday.

Earlier, four golfers were struck by lightning at a Stouffville golf course and hospitalized, one in critical condition.
