KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, June 18 (UPI) -- An overloaded boat carrying 97 people overturned off the Malaysian coast early Wednesday, with two confirmed deaths and 35 still missing.

Aboard the wooden boat were Indonesian nationals, said Mohamad Hambali Yaakup, head of the Port Klang office of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency. He added a man and a woman died.

The boat overturned about two nautical miles (3.7 miles) off the coast of Malaysia. A report by the local newspaper The Star said police suggested it did not capsize -- as was earlier presumed -- but sank because of a leak in the hull.

The boat was on its way to Indonesia when the incident occurred in windy weather conditions.

Hambali said 10 boats, a helicopter and 91 personnel were involved in the rescue.
