The protesters reportedly planned to stage an anti-World Cup demonstration at the stadium where the opening match was scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
At least one person was arrested.
Many Brazilians are angered that the government invested $15 billion, drawn mostly from public funds, in the soccer tournament. Anti-World Cup protesters argue that the billions should instead have been invested in social projects, including housing and salary increases for public servants.
