According to Pakistani intelligence and local Taliban sources who spoke to CNN, the strike targeted vehicles transporting explosives from Pakistan into Afghanistan. The missiles struck as the vehicles were about to leave the North Waziristan Agency.
Haji Gul, a senior Haqqani network commander, and Afghan Taliban commanders Mufti Sofian and Abu Bakar were among those reportedly killed.
One local intelligence official said there were at least five drones in the vicinity of Miranshah City at the time of the strike.
Pakistan's Foreign Office condemned the strike as "a violation of Pakistan's sovereignty and territorial integrity," adding that the strikes "have a negative impact on the Government's efforts to bring peace and stability in Pakistan and the region."
