ANKARA, Turkey, June 10 (UPI) -- Iranian President Hassan Rouhani made an historic visit to Turkey on Monday, marking the first visit by an Iranian head of state to Turkey in 18 years.

Rouhani traveled to Turkey to attend an Iran-Turkey Strategic High Cooperation Council meeting with Turkish leaders.

On Monday, the Iranian president met with Turkish President Abdullah Gul and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Their meeting, Rouhani said, is an example of the "rapid enhancement of relations between the two countries in all field."

Rouhani and Erdogan released a joint statement on Tuesday affirming the future cooperation of their two countries on issues of mutual interest, including economic issues and matters relating to regional stability.
