Rasmussen wished the new president well and "every success in carrying forward this new position of responsibility at a defining time in Ukraine's history."

He also emphasized that Poroshenko has a partner in NATO, as "NATO remains committed to supporting Ukraine in its wide-ranging reforms within the framework of the NATO-Ukraine Commission." NATO, Rasmussen added, is "currently finalising further comprehensive measures to assist Ukraine and support reforms in the country's security and defence sector."

NATO has voiced its support for the sovereign territorial integrity of Ukraine throughout the crisis and has condemned Russia for its aggression toward Ukraine.

Petro Poroshenko was sworn in as president of Ukraine on Saturday.
