Education ministry employee among 8 arrested for cheating university entrance exams in Cuba

HAVANA, June 9 (UPI) -- A Ministry of Education employee and five teachers were among eight arrested for illegally selling university entrance exams in Cuba.

Thousands of students were required to retake the university entrance exams because of the cheating scandal.

Although education is free in Cuba, there are incidents of teachers selling grades for money.

Cuban officials commented on the arrests in the state-run newspaper Granma.

"It has been confirmed... that the leaked materials were unscrupulously commercialised by the five teachers, some of whom sold the exams while others reviewed the content with the students."

All involved have confessed, the authorities noted.
