The protesters approached Gezi park and Taksim Square shouting "Taksim is everywhere! Taksim is resistance!" and "Resign murderer AKP!"
"You will not be able to come to those places like you did last year. Because the police have taken absolute orders, they will do all," said Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has taken a hard line against the protests.
CNN reporter Ivan Watson was covering the protests on-air when he was detained by Turkish police asking if he was a journalist. Watson later tweeted that he and his crew were released after half an hour and said he was kneed in the butt, for which an officer later apologized.
In addition to detaining journalists, Erdogan and the government have also attempted to block social media sites such including Twitter and YouTube. Erdogan accused his political opposition of using the platforms to undermine him.
