SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador, June 2 (UPI) -- The new president of El Salvador, Salvador Sanchez Ceren, was sworn in on Sunday.
Sanchez Ceren is a member of the Farabundo Marti Liberation Front (FMLN), a former rebel group that transitioned into a political party at the end of El Salvador's civil war in 1992. He was named vice president when the FMLN won the 2009 presidential election.
He is now El Salvador's first former rebel president.
At his inauguration, the new president vowed to fight corruption and violence and "to serve as president of all Salvadoreans ... with honesty, austerity, efficacy and transparency."
Sancez Ceren beat out conservative presidential candidate Mayor of San Salvador Norman Quijano in an election that Quijano alleged was corrupt and illegitimate. International election observers maintained the elections were "free and fair," a determination supported and applauded by the U.S. Department of State.
