Prominent anti-extremist journalist killed in Benghazi

Muftah Buzeid, a prominent Libyan journalist who spoke out against Islamic extremism on TV talk shows and worked as an editor-in-chief of a newspaper in Benghazi, was shot to death on Monday morning.

BENGHAZI, Libya, May 28 (UPI) -- Muftah Buzeid, a prominent Libyan journalist who vocally opposed Islamic extremism, has been killed.

Buzeid, who worked as an editor-in-chief of a local newspaper and was a frequent analyst on TV talk shows, was shot to death in Benghazi on Monday morning.

His death is the latest in a series of killings in Benghazi that have targeted security forces, activists, journalists, and judges.

Many residents attribute the violence to Islamic extremist groups, prompting greater support for opposition Gen. Khalifa Haftar and his anti-terror campaign.
