ISLAMABAD , May 21 (UPI) -- The Pakistani military announced Wednesday fighter jets bombed suspected militant hideouts near the Afghan border, killing at least 60 people.

The airstrikes were in North Waziristan Agency and targeted the villages of Hasukhel, Hurmaz, Mosaki and Khushali.

"Sixty hardcore terrorists, including some of the important commanders and foreigners, were ... killed in the strikes and around 30 were injured. The airstrikes were precise and based on intelligence reports. Therefore [there are] minimum chances of civilian casualties," a statement from the Pakistani military said.

A witness said army helicopter gunships fired on the suspected militant hideouts after the fighter planes finished.

The bombings came after NATO, Afghanistan and Pakistan agreed to increase coordination of border attacks to ensure an Afghan presidential runoff election, beginning Thursday, will proceed without interruption by insurgents.
