RIO DE JANEIRO, May 12 (UPI) -- As the World Cup approaches, Brazilian police are preparing safety guidelines for tourists.

One piece of advice: if robbed, "Do not react, scream or argue," reads one brochure that will be distributed by Brazilian embassies and consulates.

World Cup security director and policeman Mario Leite explained that "tourists come mainly from Europe and the United States, where they do not see this crime very often." By remaining calm when faced with a robber, Leite said, the victim can help to prevent "latrocinios" -- a robbery that escalates to murder.

Leite also advised World Cup tourists not to flaunt valuable belongings, take precautions at night, travel with other people, and to be aware of their surroundings.

According to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, Brazil has among the highest murder rates in the world.
