LONDON, May 8 (UPI) -- The British Navy provided an escort to a Russian aircraft carrier task group on Thursday as the vessels transited the English Channel.

A Royal Navy spokesman confirmed "that HMS Dragon was activated as the fleet-ready escort vessel. She met the task group centered around the Admiral Kuznetsov."

The Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov and other vessels in the task group had been training in the Mediterranean for months.

Russian Northern Fleet spokesman Capt. Vadim Serga said "The cruiser has accomplished its mission within the Navy task force in the Mediterranean and headed for Severomorsk. The aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov is expected to return to base by late May."
