TRIPOLI, Libya, May 5 (UPI) -- The Libyan government announced Monday that a new prime minister has been appointed.

42-year-old Ahmad Mitig is Libya's fifth -- and youngest -- premier since dictator Moammar Gadhafi was deposed in 2011.

Mitig's appointment seemed uncertain on Sunday when the deputy speaker challenged the congressional vote as invalid. Congress, however, confirmed Mitig as prime minister on Monday.

General National Congress speaker Nuri Abu Sahmein signed a resolution stating "Ahmad Mitig was appointed head of the transitional government, and asked to form his cabinet and present it to the GNC for a confidence vote within 15 days."

Mitig replaces Abdullah al-Thinni, who resigned in April after armed men attacked him and his family. In his resignation letter, al-Thinni wrote "I do not accept a single drop of Libyan blood be shed because of me and I do not accept to be a reason for fighting among Libyans because of this position."
