Syrian opposition confirms ceasefire agreement for embattled city of Homs

DAMASCUS, Syria, May 2 (UPI) -- The opposition Syrian Coalition confirmed Friday that a ceasefire has been declared for the embattled city of Homs.

The ceasefire went into effect on Friday at 12:00 p.m. local time and is expected to be in place for a period of three days.

According to the Syrian Coalition, who posted the details of the agreement on Twitter, "Representatives from both sides, UN representative, and an Iranian official met earlier in Safir Hotel in Homs to discuss the ceasefire."

Under the terms of the ceasefire agreement:

-- Fighters leave with their arms on the third day to northern Homs with guarantees from the UN; -- During the three day period, both sides will release each others' prisoners; -- The Syrian regime will enter the Old City on the third day.

In response to a request for comment on the ceasefire agreement, the Syrian Coalition told UPI "We're concerned due to lack of trust in regime based on previous broken promises."

The opposition also noted that "Another humanitarian agreement" is under discussion. No further details were made available.
