An official told BBC News that six bodies had been found in an area of the mountain just above base camp -- an elevation of 19,000 feet.
Tilak Ram Pandey, a Nepalese tourism official with the mountaineering department, told CNN that 50 people, many of them Sherpa guides, were struck by the avalanche.
"Most of the climbers have been accounted for," he said. "Rescue teams have gone ... to look for the missing."
