NEW YORK, April 13 (UPI) -- The United Nations Security Council announced Sunday it would hold an open emergency meeting to discuss the situation in Ukraine.

The decision to hold the meeting follows a surge of unrest in eastern Ukraine, with pro-Russian militants seizing control of government administration buildings.

On Sunday, the U.S. Department of State published evidence that it says suggests Russian support for destabilization of eastern Ukraine.

In advance of Sunday's meeting, British Ambassador to the UN Mark Lyall Grant tweeted that "Russia must stop stirring trouble" and remarked that "Ukraine being very restrained."

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has been urging a peaceful resolution to the crisis and has warned that "at this time of heightened tensions, even small sparks can ignite larger flames of unintended consequences."
