JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, April 8 (UPI) -- Oscar Pistorius recounted in his testimony Tuesday the moment he killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

"Just as I left my bed, I whispered for Reeva to get down and phone the police," he told the court. "As I entered the passage where the closet is to the bathroom, it was at that point that I was overcome with fear and I started screaming and shouting for the intruders to get out of my house. I shouted for Reeva to get on the floor. I shouted for her to phone the police."

He also said that he loved Steenkamp very much and has said that he was only trying to protect her. He described their relationship as reserved sometimes because they had both come out of difficult relationships when they met.

Pistorius declined to be filmed during his testimony but it can be heard on an audio feed.
