Three explosions rock Cairo University campus, killing 1 and injuring 5

Three explosions at Cairo University on Wednesday killed one and injured five.

The first explosion, state-run Nile TV reported, occurred near the university engineering facility. A second blast quickly followed, and a third a little later.

Brig. Gen. Tariq al-Mirgawi was killed in the blasts, and five others injured.

The interior ministry reported that "Experts determined that the two explosive devices were planted in one of the trees in the area." A CNN security source in the ministry said the bombs seemed to have been "homemade."

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack although it is possible that Islamist militants were responsible as they have carried out similar attacks previously. The area surrounding the university has recently become a site for clashes between police and Muslim Brotherhood supporters.

In December, the Egyptian government declared the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organization, and has launched a concerted effort to crack down on members, prompting Islamist militants to strike back in attacks often directed at government security forces.
