April 1 (UPI) -- Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong congratulated his country’s 15-year-olds for placing first in a world ranking of problem-solving skills.

Singapore students led other students from 44 countries and U.S. states in the annual Program for International Assessment (PISA).

On his Facebook page, Lee congratulated students, teachers and principals, adding the number-one ranking is a sign Singapore is on the right track and that its students can handle complex challenges effectively, Channel News Asia reported Tuesday.

Lee said students need to make the most of what schools offer, as well as acquire the tools required to think flexibly.

Education Minister Heng Swee Keat, on his Facebook page, noted international assessments such as PISA are useful to gain an external perspective on Singapore’s educational system. He added the top ranking is the result of the work of students and schools, of parents’ support and innovative teaching methods.

Heng also warned students to stay humble. There is always something to learn from others, and always room for improvement, he wrote.
