Israeli airstrike hits Syrian army targets over Golan Heights attack

JERUSALEM, March 19 (UPI) -- An Israeli airstrike hit Syrian army targets Wednesday in response to an attack on an Israeli military vehicle a day earlier in Golan Heights, officials said.

The Israeli operation targeted military command posts, artillery batteries and a training base on the Syrian side of Golan Heights that Israeli officials said helped in Tuesday's attack on the jeep in which four soldiers were wounded, the Jerusalem Post reported.

After the airstrike, Israeli Minister of Defense Moshe Ya'alon said Israel held Syrian President Bashar Assad responsible for the civil war in his country.

"If he [Assad] continues to cooperate with terrorists who seek to harm Israel he will continue to pay a heavy price that he will regret," Ya'alon said. "We will continue to act responsibly in order to preserve the security for the citizens of Israel."

A military patrol on the Golan Heights near the Syrian border came under attack Tuesday when an explosive device detonated near the soldiers' vehicle. Three of the wounded soldiers sustained light-to-moderate injuries and the fourth was seriously injured, officials said.
