Indian court upholds death sentence for 4 convicted rapist-murderers

NEW DELHI, March 13 (UPI) -- The death sentences for four men convicted in a brutal gang rape and murder of a woman in New Delhi in 2012 were upheld Thursday by city's highest court.

Defense attorneys called the decision "politically motivated" and said they would appeal to India's Supreme Court, Express News Service reported.

The trial court in September sentenced the four to death for the gang rape and killing of the 23-year-old woman, who was attacked on a moving minibus by six people, including a juvenile.

The woman died of severe intestinal injuries at Singapore's Mount Elizabeth Hospital, where she was transferred for specialized treatment.

The fifth attacker was found dead in his prison cell before he could be tried and the juvenile is serving a three-year sentence.
