Ukraine International Airlines announced Wednesday it has cancelled flights between Kiev and Simferopol International Airport in Crimea from Wednesday until March 17.

The decision to cancel flights, the airline said, followed Simeropol Airport's declaration that it would not service flights between the two cities.

UIA Executive Vice-President Serhiy Fomenko commented on the situation:

"Such discriminative measures by Simferopol airport result in inconveniences to hundreds of passengers -- both Ukrainian citizens and foreigners. The stoppage of regular air communications between Kyiv and Crimea undermines the image of Ukraine and Crimea, and causes serious economic damage to the UIA and the Simferopol airport."

Four flights are effected by the cancellations. The airline expects the situation will be resolved soon, and that flights will resume on March 18, although no further explanation was given for the airline's optimism.
