Woman who admitted killing children dies in apparent suicide

NOTTINGHAM, England, March 11 (UPI) -- A U.S. woman convicted in Scotland of killing her three children has died in an English prison hospital in an apparent suicide, officials said.

A Nottinghamshire Police spokesman called the death of Theresa Riggi early Monday "unexplained but non-suspicious," the Daily Telegraph reported. She was being held at Rampton Secure Hospital after another inmate at a Scottish women's prison attacked her.

Riggi, 49, from California, pleaded guilty to culpable homicide in 2011 and received a 16-year sentence. She was living in Edinburgh after a nasty separation from her husband, Pasquale, an oil company executive in Aberdeen.

Investigators said Riggi stabbed her twin sons, Austin and Luke, 8, and her daughter, Cecelia, 5, in their apartment, set a fire and then jumped from the balcony.

A Nottinghamshire Police spokesman said the case will be turned over to the coroner for an inquest.
