UN secretary-general meets with Venezuelan foreign minister

NEW YORK, March 3 (UPI) -- United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon met Monday with Venezuelan Foreign Minister Elías José Jaua Milano to discuss the political crisis in Venezuela.

According to the UN, the secretary-general told the foreign minister he hoped "to see reduced tensions and the necessary conditions to engage in meaningful dialogue."

Their meeting followed a statement by the secretary-general on February 26 in which he urged "all efforts be swiftly made to lower the tensions and prevent further violence."

The two leaders also discussed Venezuela's contributions to UN priorities, including climate change and Venezuela's regional role in Latin America and the Caribbean.
