AMMAN, Jordan, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- Jordanian members of Parliament called for the end to a peace treaty with Israel in reaction to Israel mulling sovereignty over the al-Aqsa mosque compound.

Forty-seven of 150 members of the lower house signed a motion Tuesday to annul the treaty, Middle East Online reported Wednesday.

"The motion came in response to Israel's actions in Jerusalem and to the Knesset debate of a law that seeks to impose Israel's sovereignty over al-Aqsa," the motion read, as quoted by al-Rai newspaper. "Israel's actions clearly violate the peace treaty. ... It is aggression against Jordanian custodianship."

The Israeli Knesset debated Tuesday an end to the practice of forbidding Jewish prayer at the compound. MP Moshe Feiglin said the fear of inciting Muslim anger amounted to discrimination against Jews.

The al-Aqsa compound sits above the Western Wall plaza and houses the Dome of the Rock and al-Aqsa mosque, making it significant to both Jews and Muslims.
