KAMPALA, Uganda, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- A Ugandan newspaper Tuesday published a list of what it contended were the country's top homosexuals a day after the president signed criminalizing gay acts.
The front page of the Red Pepper tabloid bore a headline, "EXPOSED! Uganda's 200 Top Homos Named," CNN reported.
The story was accompanied by several photographs.
The Ugandan high court banned newspapers from publishing such lists in 2010 after another tabloid, Rolling Stone, published the names of what it said were the country's 100 top gays and lesbians, along with their photos and addresses. A yellow banner read "hang them."
The bill signed by President Yoweri Museveni was introduced in 2009. It institutes life terms in prison for "aggravated homosexuality," such as infecting someone with HIV and sex with minors. The original bill called for the death penalty.
Anyone who performs same-sex marriage ceremonies can be jailed for up to seven years. Groups or activists who counsels or reaches out to gays also can be imprisoned.
