Kikar HaShabbat reported dozens of Muslims started throwing rocks and fireworks at police once the gate to the Mount was opened.
Police used stun grenades to disperse the gathering crowd, Arutz Sheva reported.
Palestinian officials said at least 15 of the protesters were injured by rubber bullets, though Israeli police said no Palestinians were injured, the Jerusalem Post reported.
Tensions are often high between Jews and Muslims related to visiting rights at the holy site, dating back to when the Wakf Muslim religious trust was given oversight of the Mount in 1967. Jews still have prayer rights at the site though police maintain a presence to prevent disturbances.
