Opposition calls for Erdogan's resignation following release of tapes

ANKARA, Turkey, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Tuesday that tapes allegedly featuring his voice were fabricated and illegally distributed.

The most recent recording, published on social media Monday, appears to feature Erdogan talking to his son about hiding $1 billion in cash, the Anadolu Agency reported.

The conversation allegedly took place Dec. 17, when prosecutors ordered police to raid several dozen homes to collect evidence as part of a corruption investigation.

The alleged leak is the most recent in a series of voice recordings published online.

Erdogan said the perpetrators are trying to target the government ahead of the local elections on March 30.

The Republican People's Party, the main opposition party, has argued for Erdogan to resign after the leak of the recording, Today's Zaman reported.

Haluk Koc, the deputy chairman of the party, said in a press conference on Monday that the government had lost its legitimacy following the alleged leak.
