Skiier killed in British Columbia avalanche

NELSON, British Columbia, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- An avalanche in the Kootenay Pass area of British Columbia, a popular back-country skiing destination, killed a man and injured a woman, officials said.

The avalanche occurred Sunday afternoon at Twin Lakes, between the cities of Nelson and Creston near Stagleap Provincial Park. The Canadian Avalanche Center issued warnings for the potential of large and destructive avalanches during the weekend.

Search and rescue crews reported poor weather canceled an attempted helicopter rescue of the pair. A team of 26 rescuers skied into the area instead, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Monday.

The unidentified injured woman was located and pulled out. The body of the man, unidentified but believed to be in his 20s, was left on site to be recovered Monday.
