Seven dead in Vietnam after cable on pedestrian bridge snaps

HANOI, Vietnam, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- At least seven people are dead after a cable on a bridge in Vietnam snapped Monday morning, sending funeral mourners into the rocky stream below, officials say.

Authorities said the walkway was supposed to be able to hold 1 1/2 tons and collapsed while 50 people were on it, the VnExpress newspaper reported.

Dozens of people were injured when a cable of the pedestrian suspension bridge broke, causing the bridge to tilt and spill people into a shallow stream.

Ten people were treated at local hospitals in the Tam Duong district of northern Lai Chau province while 27 others were transferred to other hospitals in the province. Eight people required emergency surgery, said Nguyn Cong Hoan, director of the province's health department.
