Russian gets five years in prison for beating candy thief to death

SAMARA, Russia, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- A Russian man who pummeled an alleged shoplifter to death over a box of chocolates has been sentenced to five years in prison, prosecutors say.

The unidentified defendant received the punishment for manslaughter in the fatal beating at a candy store in Samara, Russia's RIA Novosti news agency said.

Prosecutors said in a written statement Friday the defendant punched and kicked the alleged thief several times in the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The date of the attack wasn't available.
