Leak of radioactive water at Fukushima nuclear plant contained

OKUMA, Japan, Feb. 21 (UPI) -- A leak from a water storage tank at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station caused radioactive water to trickle into the ground, authorities said.

The leak was detected Wednesday, and about 100 cubic meters (3,531 cubic feet) of water entered the ground adjacent to the storage tank before it was stopped, the International Atomic Energy Agency reported Friday.

The agency said the recommendations of Japan's Nuclear Regulatory Authority, that contaminated soil be removed, were appropriate, and added the leak poses no danger to the public.

The power station was the site of a catastrophic failure in March 2011, when it was simultaneously struck by a tsunami and an earthquake
