ISLAMABAD, Feb. 21 (UPI) -- A special court formed to try former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf on treason ruled Friday the retired general won't be tried in a military court.
Judge Faisal Arab asked Musharraf to be in court March 11 for indictment now that the question of jurisdiction had been decided, the Hindu reported.
The defense had argued that under terms of the Pakistan Army Act, Musharraf could be tried only before a military court.
Musharraf, a career Army officer, was chief of staff in 1999 when he seized power in a military coup. He became president in 2001 and headed the military for most of his time in office.
One of Musharraf's lawyers, Rana Ijaz Ahmed Khan, criticized the ruling and accused the judge of being a "hired killer," the Hindu said.
The judge admonished the lawyer and suggested that he file an appeal if he didn't accept the order.
