DALEH, Yemen, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- Eleven people were killed in a clash between separatists and Yemeni government soldiers Tuesday in the southern city of Daleh, officials said.

A Yemeni military spokesman said an Army convoy was ambushed near some government offices in Daleh. Rebel forces used anti-tank rockets and automatic rifles. Five of the Yemeni soldiers in the convoy, including an officer, were killed. Three of the rebels were killed along with three civilians, Middle East Online said.

Yemen, Africa's poorest country, has been the subject of internal strife for decades. The southern half of the country was independent from the time Great Britain released colonial control in 1967 and a reunification effort in the 1990s. Independent sentiment runs high in the region and separatists have staged an increasing number of ambush-style attacks in recent months, Middle East Online said.
