Wild weather takes lives in England as more high winds batter country

LONDON, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- High winds continued to claim lives Friday in England with a woman dying in London when masonry from a building fell on her car.

In the English Channel, a passenger on the cruise ship Marco Polo was killed by a "rogue wave," the Daily Mirror reported. The vessel was returning to Tilbury on the Thames downriver from London after a cruise to the Azores.

In Hampshire, 32 people were rescued from a restaurant on the beach in Milford on Sea, the BBC reported. Surf flooded the Marine Restaurant while pebbles picked up by high winds broke the windows.

"The restaurant customers and staff moved upstairs while waiting to be rescued. They were evacuated in an army vehicle," a coast guard spokesman said.

The woman who was killed in London was in a car near Holborn Tube Station when parts of a building were blown off by the wind, the Mirror said. Three other people were injured.

Britain and Ireland have been enduring one of the worst winters in years with widespread flooding, cold temperatures, snow and wind. Heavy rain was predicted for much of the weekend, with flood warnings across the country.

Prince William and his brother, Prince Harry, pitched in Friday, helping members of the armed forces with sandbags in Datchet, a village in the Thames Valley near Windsor. Buckingham Palace said their grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, has contributed livestock feed and bedding to farmers in the Somerset Levels, a low-lying area on the Bristol Channel where thousands of acres have been inundated.
