Six die in natural gas explosion in Navoly, Uzbekistan

Feb. 11, 2014 at 4:23 PM

NAVOLY, Uzbekistan, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- Six people died and seven were injured Tuesday in an explosion caused by a natural gas leak in Navoly, Uzbekistan, authorities reported.

Such accidents are not uncommon in the central Asian country, since many Uzbek homes lack central heating and residents typically turn up their gas ovens to warm them.

An interruption in the delivery of natural gas can cause unstable pressure in the line, leading to gas accumulation in the home and a threat of poisoning or explosion, the Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported.

In southern Uzbekistan last week, a family of four died of gas poisoning, and another family suffered severe burns in an explosion, RIA Novosti said.
